So there’s this rumor going around that the Eaton Center, the (arguably) largest mall in downtown Toronto, has banned the raver scene from the premises.

It’s interesting how fast this rumor is spreading even though there is no mention of such a policy move by either the mall’s official website or any official media outlets.

It doesn’t matter who was acting out of line. If this is at all true, banning an entire genre or subculture is simply an idiotic move by the establishment, as it is bad for business if not totally discriminatory. Anyone who agrees with this ban (if it even is an actual ban on ravers) is equally discriminatory and therefore, as a consequence, wrong.

There is nothing wrong with banning individuals who persistently cause trouble. It is perfectly justified move and any members of society, no matter what subculture to background they hail from need to grow up. Making the mistake of agreeing with discriminatory policy, however, just because some idiots pissed you off that one time and they had it coming, makes you a far greater fool than the supposed perpetrators.

This thought process is sadly nothing new, though. All scenes have bad apples. It’s important to recognize the fact that those bad apples are few, just like bad people are few. I know that this is not popular knowledge but it’s an actual, undeniable, fact. If there were more criminals among us than decent human beings, there would be no civilization. You wouldn’t be able to walk down the street without getting killed.

So I say don’t listen to those negative types around you who hide behind their false sense of security by enthroning themselves as “realists” and don’t let some bad apples make you, in turn, make poor decisions such as supporting bad policies or other such emotionally driven knee-jerk reactions.

Such emotional responses must always be stifled by proper analysis and rational thinking, or as the ravers say, “Keep it PLUR!”

Much love,
